Have any of you guys used federal school loans to pay off part of your credit card debt?

I will be attending graduate school this coming fall. While relocating I've racked up some credit card debt. I intend to work while in college but for the first month I will be strapped for cash. I know you can only use your federal school loans for tuition, room and board, and other related expenses. Nevertheless, would be a problem if I used part of my loan to pay for this coming credit card bill?

Do what you must.

Sounds like you know the rules, you have a situation, you have a plan, and you desire a certain solution.

I honestly don't think you need us to validate the method to your madness.

Unlike credit card debt those student loans will follow you and you WILL have to pay them off and even a BK can not save you from student loans!

So do you really want to trade debt that is POTENTIALLY uncollectible to a debt that is and will be collected?

Whatever you borrow over your expenses through school can technically be used for anything.

The school doesn't hold onto any extra money for you, it cuts you a check so you can pay for your books, etc.

Not what I'd recommend doing, though.

When I got my student loan, the money went direct to the school for tuition. They only approved enough money for tuition and other school related expenses. I had an account in school just for books and other school related expenses. I never wanted a check sent direct to me so I don't know.

I guess you can do that if the check sent it to you as long as you actually attending school and paying your tuition. Any extra money you can use it for yourself. I'm surprised that they even approved for more than what you need for school. However, if you applied for student loan and never attended school, you just use the money to pay your personal debt, you may have a lot of explaining to do. Prepare the money to pay back in case they find out and I'm sure they will.
