My parents are paying for college, but i have to pay my own rent, can i get a student loan just for living expenses and not school costs? I will be living off campus as my school does not have on campus living.

Yes you can...I have a ton of student loans that were all extra for spending/rent/etc.

At the beginning of the year when you are requesting loans, you can request more than what the school estimates your costs to be. Your school will probabaly have a max of extra that they will approve. My school approved $8-10,000 extra per school year that I took out each year. In addition, if they do not approve enough to get you by, you can always do a private student loan that will not go through the school. I also have a couple private loans through Chase and Citibank.

Banks should be lining up to give you money! Just watch the interest rates if you have to do a private loan and you will be fine. Good luck!

No problem. And to the commenter below...$140K is pretty good to get away with if you go to a private med school! I have friends in debt well over $300K!

no..id ont think soo...unless....its an income issue....

yes. you can get a loan for anything you need while in school. Check with your bank, credit unions, sites like astrive, and do your research.

borrowing money to "live on" is a bad idea. You'll be paying that rent, utilities and everything for 10 years or more. Get a part time job and stay at home if you can.

140K in student loans is ludicrous and private loans are evil.
